Saudi Arabia Resumes Lebanese Exports After Years of Trade Freeze

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia has announced the resumption of Lebanese exports to the kingdom, ending years of restricted trade ties in a significant diplomatic and economic breakthrough for Beirut.

The decision was ordered by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud following a request by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The announcement came in the wake of a phone call Wednesday between Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah Al Saud and Salam.

The kingdom said the move acknowledges tangible progress made by Beirut in rebuilding state institutions over the past year, as well as Lebanon's cooperation in fulfilling its required commitments, the agency reported.

During the call, the Saudi foreign minister reaffirmed Riyadh's steadfast support for Lebanon's stability, territorial sovereignty, and the welfare of its people. He also expressed confidence that Lebanon would uphold its obligation to prevent its territory from being exploited as a launchpad for actions harmful to neighboring states.

The resumption marks a significant thaw following years of deteriorating trade relations. Saudi Arabia had moved to halt certain Lebanese imports — particularly agricultural products — in 2021 after authorities discovered that some shipments were being used as a cover for narcotics smuggling. Riyadh had since made trade normalization contingent on Beirut implementing tighter export controls and credible anti-drug smuggling measures.
