Israel Strike on Beirut Triggers First Phase of Wider Response—Iran
Ali Akbar Velayati warned that the current situation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait should not lead Israel into what he called a “miscalculation,” adding that regional waterways could be drawn into the escalation if tensions continue.
He said, “The resistance axis has the capability to shut both waterways. The choice is yours: stop the foolishness or enter a balanced equation involving the two straits,” referring in part to the Strait of Hormuz.
Velayati also claimed that earlier predictions had been fulfilled through a missile response he described as being of the “Zat al-Salasil type,” adding that the Beirut strike and what he called a ceasefire violation had triggered the initial stage of retaliation.
The comments followed Iranian missile barrages launched toward northern Israel late Sunday after an Israeli airstrike hit Beirut’s southern suburbs. Israel said the strike targeted a Hezbollah command and planning facility.
The Beirut attack reportedly killed two people and injured 11 others, according to preliminary figures cited in reports.
