Lebanon, Israel Move Toward “Pilot Zones” Under Ceasefire Framework

(MENAFN) Lebanon and Israel have reportedly agreed to renew their fragile ceasefire arrangement and introduce “pilot zones” in which the Lebanese Armed Forces would assume full territorial control, with all non-state armed groups excluded, according to a joint statement released on Wednesday.

The agreement followed the fourth round of US-mediated discussions held at the U.S. State Department, where both sides reportedly focused on mechanisms to stabilize the border situation and reduce ongoing tensions.

Under the outlined understanding, the continuation of the ceasefire would depend on the complete halt of fire from Hezbollah and the removal of its operatives from the South Litani sector. The joint statement also emphasized plans to rapidly establish designated pilot areas where only the Lebanese military would be allowed to operate, effectively excluding other armed actors.

These initial steps are intended to pave the way toward a broader peace and security framework, with both sides agreeing to resume political and security negotiations in the week of June 22 in pursuit of a more comprehensive settlement.

The statement also noted that both countries reaffirmed they hold no hostile intentions toward each other. Discussions reportedly included a wider security arrangement that would involve dismantling armed non-state groups and preventing their re-emergence in the future.

In addition, the statement included condemnation of Iran’s regional role, particularly its support for allied armed groups and actions described as destabilizing to the wider Middle East.

According to Lebanese sources cited in reports, the second and final day of talks at the U.S. State Department lasted more than six hours, reflecting the complexity of the negotiations.

The US-sponsored dialogue comes amid continued cross-border hostilities, with near-daily Israeli strikes in Lebanon reported in recent weeks despite a ceasefire that initially took effect on April 17 and was later extended into early July.
