Lebanon Warns Heritage Sites in South at Risk from Escalating Strikes
Speaking to AFP, Culture Minister Ghassan Salame said that bombardments were occurring dangerously close to the ancient ruins of Tyre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, raising concerns about the preservation of the area’s archaeological heritage.
He also stated that Beaufort Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the Nabatieh region, had been directly struck during recent attacks. According to Salame, multiple explosions impacted the structure as fighting intensified in the surrounding area.
“The intensification of the battles means that these sites are in serious danger,” he said.
Lebanon has accused Israeli forces of increasing strikes across southern areas despite a ceasefire agreement that was intended to take effect in mid-April but has not been implemented in practice. Both sides have continued military operations, each blaming the other for violations.
In recent days, evacuation warnings were issued for parts of the southern coastal city of Tyre, followed by heavy strikes reported in nearby districts. Observers noted that some targeted areas were located close to historically significant archaeological zones.
Salame said the fighting has effectively turned parts of southern Lebanon into active conflict zones, including regions surrounding Beaufort Castle, which has strategic importance and historical significance due to its previous use as a military position during earlier conflicts.
He also pointed to damage in other culturally important areas, including Shamaa, a multi-religious heritage site located near Tyre. According to him, the site sustained severe damage and lost several of its domes due to bombardment.
The minister stressed that continued escalation threatens not only civilian infrastructure but also Lebanon’s cultural and historical heritage, which spans thousands of years and includes sites recognized internationally for their value.
