France Calls for Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon, Respect for Ceasefire
Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin said on Wednesday on the social media platform X that “Israel must withdraw from Lebanese territory.”
She added that France’s goal is to support Lebanon and its population in achieving peace and long-term stability.
“All parties must respect the ceasefire and preserve Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” she said.
Vautrin also stated that efforts to disarm Hezbollah should be led by Lebanon with backing from the international community.
“France strongly condemns all attacks against UNIFIL, which are unjustifiable,” she added, referring to the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
Israel currently maintains a buffer zone in southern Lebanon, where it launched operations in early March amid escalating cross-border tensions involving Hezbollah, which responded during the wider regional conflict linked to the Iran war.
A US-mediated ceasefire came into effect on April 17 and was later extended until mid-May.
