French, Pakistani Presidents Express “Serious Concern” Over Lebanon
Sharif, writing on X, said both leaders expressed “serious concern” about the situation, emphasizing the need to bring hostilities to an immediate end. “We also expressed serious concern over the ongoing aggression in Lebanon and stressed the urgent need to end the violence and loss of innocent lives, so that peace may be restored across the region,” he said.
The Pakistani leader added that Macron “graciously congratulated Pakistan on its sincere efforts in facilitating the ceasefire between Iran and the United States and for helping bring both sides to the negotiating table,” underscoring Islamabad’s diplomatic role.
Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s intention to coordinate closely with international partners, including France, to ensure that the current opening leads to sustainable peace. He also reaffirmed cooperation with allies such as the United Kingdom, responding to a message from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who had shared a joint statement acknowledging Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
In a separate development, the Maldives issued a sharp condemnation of the strikes on Lebanon. Its foreign ministry warned, “Such blatant acts continue to undermine international efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region, while posing a serious threat to further destabilization of regional security,” and called on the global community to “take immediate and decisive action to hold Israel accountable.”
The diplomatic push comes after Iran and the United States agreed to a two-week ceasefire earlier this week, brokered by Pakistan, aimed at creating space for a broader settlement to end a conflict launched on Feb. 28. The war has resulted in thousands of casualties.
