Lebanon Asks Ukraine to Hand Over Suspected Israeli Mossad Agent

(MENAFN) Lebanon has formally requested that the Ukrainian Embassy in Beirut surrender a man accused of operating as an agent for Israel's Mossad intelligence service, with the country's top security official alleging his involvement in bombing and assassination plots on Lebanese soil.

Lebanese security chief Hassan Choukeir confirmed the request, identifying the suspect as a Syrian-Palestinian national who also holds a Ukrainian passport. According to media, the man was detained by Hezbollah in September 2025 after he parked a motorbike packed with explosives along a road leading to Beirut airport through the city's southern suburbs.

The suspect managed to slip away in early March, during a period of active Israeli military strikes on Hezbollah targets, and took refuge inside the Ukrainian Embassy, media reported. Ukrainian diplomats subsequently approached Lebanese authorities requesting that the man — who they claimed "had lost his passport" — be permitted to leave the country.

Lebanese officials, however, were not persuaded.

"After checking his name and photograph, we became aware that he is wanted by the Lebanese judiciary," Choukeir told media.

The Ukrainian Embassy did not respond to French media request for comment.

The episode throws an uncomfortable spotlight on Kiev's increasingly active regional alignments. Ukraine is among several European nations backing the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. President Vladimir Zelensky has publicly offered to assist the US and Gulf states hosting American military bases in intercepting Iranian drones and securing the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran has responded with an unambiguous warning, putting Kiev on notice that it would consider Ukraine a legitimate military target should it intervene in Middle Eastern hostilities.
