Israeli Strike Injures Ghanaian UN Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon

(MENAFN) Several members of the Ghanaian contingent serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were hurt Friday when their position in southern Lebanon was reportedly targeted by an Israeli strike, according to reports.

A UNIFIL site in Qouzah, located in the Bint Jbeil district, was struck, causing injuries among the Ghanaian peacekeepers, though the exact number of those affected has not been confirmed. No statement has been issued by UNIFIL regarding the incident.

UNIFIL was established in 1978 following Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon, and its mandate was substantially expanded after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah under UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The force currently comprises more than 10,000 peacekeepers tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting the Lebanese army in asserting authority south of the Litani River.

The strike comes amid Israel’s intensifying military operations in Lebanon since Monday, following limited rocket fire by Hezbollah, in the context of broader regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the US, and Iran.
