Lebanese President Vows Justice on Beirut Port Explosion Anniversary

(MENAFN) On the fifth anniversary of the catastrophic Beirut port explosion, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun pledged on Monday to ensure justice is served.

In a message shared via the Lebanese Presidency on X, Aoun condemned the August 4, 2020 explosion—among the most devastating non-nuclear blasts globally—as “a major crime that shook the conscience of the nation and the world, claiming the lives of more than 200 martyrs, injuring thousands of innocent people, and destroying entire neighborhoods of our beloved capital.”

He asserted the state’s unwavering determination to pursue the truth: “The Lebanese state, with all its institutions, is committed to uncovering the whole truth regardless of obstacles or the rank of those involved.”

“Justice will not die, and accountability is inevitable,” Aoun declared.

He stressed that identifying and prosecuting those responsible remains a fundamental national objective: “We will continue to press all competent authorities to ensure transparent and fair investigations that bring perpetrators to justice.”

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut also issued a statement in solidarity with the Lebanese people, backing their call for justice. It emphasized that Lebanon “deserves an independent and impartial judicial system that delivers justice for the victims, not protections for the elites,” and reiterated Washington’s support for “a sovereign, stable, and prosperous Lebanon shaped by its people— not outside forces.”

The 2020 blast killed more than 220 individuals, wounded over 7,000, and leveled vast sections of Beirut, leaving the city reeling amid an ongoing economic collapse.

Authorities attribute the explosion to approximately 2,750 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate that had been confiscated from a ship and stored in Warehouse 12 at the port since 2014.
